Castillo-Piquito

HISTORY

There goes “Piquito” going down the slope of the castle of Jumilla…

“Piquito” was the affectionate nickname that Don Juan José Martínez Abellán, historical owner of our winery during the 80’s, nickname received for his extraordinary sales skills. “Piquito de oro” is a Castilian expression that describes those gifted with an extremely convincing dialectic, which would be understood in English as the “gift of the gab”.

Years later, we pay tribute to their dedication and hard work through our “Piquito” wine.

PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy is based on four fundamental pillars:

Monastrell, soil and climate.

Monastrell is a unique and special variety that makes us different. The result, grapes of surprising concentration that produce potent, fruity, sumptuous and meaty wines.

Limestone-sandy soils allow for an unequalled cultivation of our Monastrell grapes. Poor soils, low rainfall, and extreme temperatures place unique demands on the vines.

Our Mediterranean climate, dry and sunny with a continental influence, helps our grapes to a healthy ripening, avoiding disease risk and allowing for an entirely sustainable viticulture.

Continuous Improvement.

Continuous Improvement and Excellence. From the very beginnings through to today, we have always strived to improve, day after day, with our ultimate goal being the achievement of excellence in our viticulture, our processes and in our wine.

History, Tradition and Technology.

The wisdom to bring together the endeavours of our ancestors and to unite that respectfully with the science and technology that exists today will lead us to perfection.

Sustainability.

Everything begins with the soil, respectful cultivation of our vineyards and with processes that guarantee protection of the environment. Nature is everything and taking care of it allows us to carry out sustainable viticulture, with over half of our vineyards certified as ecological.

OUR VINYEARDS

Distance: 34km from the historical centre of Jumilla.

Vineyard extension: 120 hectares

Altitude: 700 metres

Soil: Sandy, over a bed of limestone.

Average age: 30 years

Climate: Continental with some influence from the nearby Mediterranean. A dry, arid climate.

SUSTAINABILITY

We care about the environment so important for the development of our wines. We take care of our vineyards as well as the correct development of their fauna and flora.

The sun of our Mediterranean, the warmth of our climate and the height of our mountains. When we hear people talk about crops, we think of the home of our dreams, those dreams that drive us day by day.
