HISTORY

To know the history of “The wines of Las Hermanas” we must go back in time to the year 1841, when a commander of the Spanish Army in the island of Luzón, at the Philippines, returned after his retirement to his native Jumilla, a Murcian town located southeast of Spain and decides, in honor of the place that gave him a lot, to name his lands after the island where he was at, thus creating “La Finca de Luzón”, the germ of what Bodegas Luzón is today.

It was after long years of winemaking that the commander Don José Molina, decided to make a surprising change in the inheritance of his lands, giving, in perpetuity, the lands of Luzón to the older sister of all of his children, Mrs. Ana Josefa de Molina, leaving in writing that “The Lands of Luzon will be inherited by the first-born girl in perpetuity”, thus, until 1980, where the last heir sold the lands.

Throughout the twentieth century, the people of Jumilla spoke of the wines of Bodegas Luzón as “The wines of the Sisters (Las Hermanas in Spanish)”, since the Molina family was well known in town and it was surprising that it was the sisters and not the brothers, who had control of the winery.

Years after, we wanted to pay tribute to all that generation of women, brave and undoubtedly ahead of their time, who took over Bodegas Luzón through six wines, involuntarily naming their legacy. The legacy of Las Hermanas.

Thereby, each of the wines pays tribute to each of those women: Ana, the first heiress, Carmen (first-born of Ana Josefa), María (Carmen’s sister, took charge of the winery while Carmen was in Valencia accompanying her husband), Luisa (Carmen’s little sister), Salvadora and Amparo (last of the heiresses who died in Jumilla at age 100 in 1988).

PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy is based on four fundamental pillars:

Monastrell, soil and climate.

Monastrell is a unique and special variety that makes us different. The result, grapes of surprising concentration that produce potent, fruity, sumptuous and meaty wines.

Limestone-sandy soils allow for an unequalled cultivation of our Monastrell grapes. Poor soils, low rainfall, and extreme temperatures place unique demands on the vines.

Our Mediterranean climate, dry and sunny with a continental influence, helps our grapes to a healthy ripening, avoiding disease risk and allowing for an entirely sustainable viticulture.

Continuous Improvement.

Continuous Improvement and Excellence. From the very beginnings through to today, we have always strived to improve, day after day, with our ultimate goal being the achievement of excellence in our viticulture, our processes and in our wine.

History, Tradition and Technology.

The wisdom to bring together the endeavours of our ancestors and to unite that respectfully with the science and technology that exists today will lead us to perfection.

Sustainability.

Everything begins with the soil, respectful cultivation of our vineyards and with processes that guarantee protection of the environment. Nature is everything and taking care of it allows us to carry out sustainable viticulture, with over half of our vineyards certified as ecological.

OUR VINEYARDS

Currently, the winery manages more than 120 hectares of vineyards registered in the Protected Designation of Origin of Jumilla for the Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Macabeo varieties

SUSTAINABILITY

We care about the environment so important for the development of our wines. We take care of our vineyards as well as the correct development of their fauna and flora.

The sun of our Mediterranean, the warmth of our climate and the height of our mountains. When we hear people talk about crops, we think in the home of our dreams, those dreams that drive us day by day.
